Large image files are the single most common reason web pages load slowly. Every extra megabyte delays rendering, eats mobile data allowances, and pushes visitors away — bounce rates climb sharply once a page takes more than a couple of seconds to appear.

For website owners the stakes are even higher: Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as a ranking factor. The Largest Contentful Paint metric — how fast the main visible content appears — is usually dominated by a hero image or a product photo. Compressing that one image from 4 MB to 400 KB is often the fastest performance improvement you can make to a page.

Smaller images also cut storage and bandwidth costs on servers and CDNs, fit inside email attachment limits, upload faster to social platforms, and let you keep more photos on the devices you own.

Lossy compression trades a little quality for a lot of size. The skill is stopping at the right point.
