The free image compressor that works entirely in your browser

PhotoShrinker is a free image compressor built to help you reduce image size in seconds — without uploading a single file to a server. Whether you need to compress photos online, reduce JPG size, or compress PNG files for faster web pages, the entire process runs locally on your device using Web Workers.

Drop one image or a whole batch and PhotoShrinker acts as a complete image optimizer: it re-encodes every file into an optimized JPEG, shows you the saved percentage in real time, and bundles everything into one ZIP for download. It is the simplest way to shrink photo size while keeping excellent visual quality — no accounts, no watermarks, and no software to install.

Because nothing ever leaves your browser, it is a genuinely private photo size reducer: your personal memories, client work and confidential graphics stay on your machine. Upload, compress, and download — your images are yours alone.

Why smaller images matter

Large image files are the single most common reason web pages load slowly. Every extra megabyte delays rendering, eats mobile data allowances, and pushes visitors away — bounce rates climb sharply once a page takes more than a couple of seconds to appear.

For website owners the stakes are even higher: Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as a ranking factor. The Largest Contentful Paint metric — how fast the main visible content appears — is usually dominated by a hero image or a product photo. Compressing that one image from 4 MB to 400 KB is often the fastest performance improvement you can make to a page.

Smaller images also cut storage and bandwidth costs on servers and CDNs, fit inside email attachment limits, upload faster to social platforms, and let you keep more photos on the devices you own.

Image quality vs. file size

Lossy compression trades a little quality for a lot of size. The skill is stopping at the right point. PhotoShrinker's presets map that trade-off for you: High Quality keeps near-identical detail, Balanced typically removes 50–70% of the bytes with differences invisible at normal viewing distance, and Smallest Size prioritizes tiny files for thumbnails, attachments and storage cleanup.

With the Custom slider you control it yourself: lower the quality until you can barely notice a difference, then stop. That point differs per image — photos with smooth backgrounds compress more aggressively than detailed textures, so testing a few images from your batch pays off.

JPEG, PNG or WEBP — which format?

A quick guide to choosing the right format before you compress.

JPEG

Best for photographs

The universal format for photos. It uses lossy compression, which means a little detail is traded for a big size reduction. Every browser, email client and CMS understands it, which is why PhotoShrinker exports optimized photos as JPEG by default.

PNG

Best for graphics & screenshots

Lossless and pixel-perfect, ideal for logos, UI screenshots and flat graphics with text or sharp edges. That precision makes photo files saved as PNG enormous — converting a PNG photo to JPEG or WEBP usually cuts its size by 70% or more.

WEBP

Best for modern websites

The modern successor: about 30% smaller than JPEG at similar visual quality, with transparency support. PhotoShrinker can export WEBP directly, and automatically switches transparent images to WEBP so their alpha channel survives compression.

What people use PhotoShrinker for

Websites & CMS platforms

Compress hero images, blog photos and product pictures before uploading to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify or any CMS — faster pages, better Core Web Vitals scores.

E-commerce stores

Product galleries with dozens of images are the heaviest part of most shops. Optimized photos mean quicker category pages and more completed checkouts.

Email attachments

Most mail providers cap attachments around 25 MB. Compressing photos first lets you attach more of them without hitting the limit.

Social media & messaging

Upload profile pictures, posts and chat attachments faster on mobile data — many platforms re-compress aggressively anyway, so start with a clean, small file.

Storage cleanup

Reclaim space on your phone, laptop or cloud drive by shrinking years of photos while keeping them perfectly viewable.

Client deliverables

Send designers, printers or agencies lighter files that still look professional — no uploads, so confidential material stays private.
